Details
A luminous glass slipper sits in the young woman’s open hand, painted in a single bright stroke and holding the most light in the picture. She stands against a flat ground of deep petrol-blue and meets the viewer’s eye without hurry, her hair gathered up, a pale dress slipping from one shoulder, gold at the throat, at the ears, and at the wrist. The ground offers nothing for her to be measured against. Azekwoh gives her the object at the start, resting in an open palm, and three points of gold besides, so she is already in possession of the proof and of the wealth the story was going to award her at the end. The tale as it came down was not written for a Black girl, and it runs on a long procedure for making one demonstrate a worth she held the whole time. Taking the slipper out of the plot leaves that procedure with nothing left to establish.
