Azekwoh paints Abraham and Isaac before the knife.
That decision changes the story.
An old man holds a sleeping child against his chest. A red thread circles the child’s wrist. There is no mountain, no altar, no angel arriving at the final second.
For the moment, Isaac is simply somebody’s son.
By moving backward in the biblical narrative, Azekwoh restores the ordinary domestic tenderness that the famous act of sacrifice tends to overwhelm. Before Isaac becomes proof of Abraham’s faith, he is the child Sara waited for and Abraham carried.
The covenant begins as household intimacy.
Ancient stories are treated here not as distant European religious imagery but as human stories that can pass naturally through an African present.
Before scripture made them symbols, they were a family.
